One of the greatest challenges for a career adviser is not supporting the students who already have questions. It is identifying those who remain uncertain, avoid career conversations and may otherwise leave school without a clear plan.
These students are not necessarily disengaged. Many feel overwhelmed by the number of choices, lack confidence in their abilities or simply do not know where to begin. Others may assume career guidance is only for students who already have a particular occupation in mind.
MyCareerMatch gives advisers a practical way to find and support them.
What many career advisers do not realise is that MyCareerMatch includes a short, built-in two-question survey designed to identify students who are still undecided about their future. Their names are highlighted in the Career Adviser school portal, making it much easier to see who may need follow-up rather than waiting for them to ask for help.
This turns career guidance from a reactive process into a proactive one.
Instead of beginning with the difficult question, “What career do you want?”, MyCareerMatch starts by helping students understand who they are, their natural strengths, how they prefer to work and the types of careers that may suit them. It removes the pressure to already have an answer and replaces uncertainty with personalised possibilities. The report then becomes a conversation starter, not a final decision.
Ways to use MyCareerMatch
Begin by reviewing the school portal and identifying the students highlighted as undecided. Invite them to a short individual conversation, a small group session or a follow-up activity during careers, pastoral care or wellbeing time.
Ask each student to highlight three strengths they recognise in themselves and three careers they would like to explore. This gives them an easy starting point and helps the adviser focus the discussion.
Students can then choose one career to research, one subject or course pathway to investigate and one person to speak with. These small actions create momentum without making the process feel overwhelming.
MyCareerMatch does not replace the expertise of the career adviser. It helps advisers identify the students who may otherwise be missed, start better conversations and ensure uncertainty does not become inaction.
Students do not need to leave school with their whole future decided. But every student should leave with greater self-awareness, realistic options and a clear next step.
