But their Parents Lack Knowledge of Post-High School Options
Many Gen Z parents are largely unaware of the full range of options available after high school, other than taking a university degree or getting a job. There’s a wealth of career opportunities that don’t require a 3 or 4 year degree, cost less and are equally rewarding that they are not aware of.
While Gen Z high school students lack knowledge about their options, this doesn’t mean they aren’t interested. They tend to show the most enthusiasm about the paths they know best: 45% of students are “very interested” in enrolling in a bachelor’s degree program in the first year after high school, while 40% express strong interest in entering the workforce. Less than 20% are very interested in any other post secondary school option.
In a recent survey conducted by Gallup USA, Jobs for the Future, 90% of Gen Z students said they trust their parents to advise them on next steps after high school. Now here’s the problem!
Parents say they don’t know enough about the vast majority of valuable education and training options their children could pursue. They’re especially in the dark about anything that isn’t either pursuing a career directly or getting a bachelor’s degree. And parents aren’t alone.
The challenge is particularly acute for first-generation students or those from lower-income households, who are much less likely to know about high-quality post secondary options than those whose parents went to university. Two-thirds said they would have considered alternative pathway programs if they had more information about them.
